On Monday 10 August the Ukrainian Library at our offices on Rue de Rollingergrund filled up for an evening with Dmytro Schebetyuk, founder of Доступно.UA (Dostupno.UA) — civic activist, traveller, musician, host of the Inclusion section on Telebachennya Toronto, and a laureate of the Human Rights Tulip Award.
Dmytro’s story is a list of things people assumed could not be done. He has hitchhiked across Ukraine and Europe. He swam across the Bosphorus. He completed a marathon. And for years he has campaigned for accessibility and inclusion through Dostupno.UA, an organisation that audits buildings, transport and public spaces and then tells the truth about what it finds.
The evening was a frank conversation about unity among Ukrainians, mutual support, life and the future of Ukraine, and about keeping the connections between Ukrainians alive wherever they happen to be. Dmytro presented his book «Автостопом на кріслі колісному» — 19 days, 17 countries and €100 in his pocket — shared stories from the road, and played his own songs on the guitar. Books and postcards were available in exchange for a donation.
The Ukrainian Library exists for evenings like this one. It is a room with books in it, and it is also the place where the community in Luxembourg meets itself.
