SUMMARY:UA Days Opening Concert
DESCRIPTION:Piano Quintets by Vasyl Barvinsky and Borys Lyatoshynsky.\nThis evening’s program highlights two of Ukraine’s most important composers\, whose music blends national identity with universal emotions.\nPerformed by Phoenix String Quartet with Pianist Violina Petrychenko. \n  \n\n\nPROGRAM\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoenix String Quartet with pianist Violina Petrychenko \nThe Phoenix String Quartet\, founded in 2006 in Lviv\, Ukraine\, brings together graduates of the Mykola Lysenko Lviv National Music Academy: \n\nMykola Havyuk\, Violin\nPetro Titiaiev\, Violin\nAnna Bura\, Viola\nDenys Litvinenko\, Cello\n\nThe ensemble has performed at numerous international chamber music festivals and has been awarded the prestigious Liudkevych Prize for its artistic excellence. Since 2023\, Violina Petrychenko has joined the quartet as a pianist\, expanding it into a quintet to introduce Ukrainian chamber music to a broader audience. \n\nViolina Petrychenko\, born in Zaporizhzhia\, studied in Kyiv\, Weimar\, Cologne\, and Essen. She has released six albums featuring works by 20th-century Ukrainian composers\, earning multiple Opus Klassik nominations. As the artistic director of the “Sounds of Ukraine” festival and a soloist with the Lviv Philharmonic\, she is passionately dedicated to promoting Ukrainian music worldwide. \nProgram: Piano Quintets by Vasyl Barvinsky and Borys Lyatoshynsky \nThis evening’s program highlights two of Ukraine’s most important composers\, whose music blends national identity with universal emotions. \nVasyl Barvinsky (1888–1963) \nThe Piano Quintet in G minor\, composed around 1912\, is one of the most significant Ukrainian chamber music works of the early 20th century. \n\nThe first movement\, Grave\, quasi sospitando\, sets a dark and searching tone\, filled with expressive lamenting motifs.\nThe second movement\, Allegro non troppo\, contrasts dramatic passages with folk-inspired elements.\nThe final movement\, Prayer\, is a deeply spiritual Adagio\, imbued with solemn beauty.\n\nAfter Barvinsky was arrested by the Soviet regime\, his manuscripts were destroyed. He later reconstructed the quintet from memory—an act of artistic resilience and devotion to his homeland. \nBorys Lyatoshynsky (1895–1968) \nThe Piano Quintet\, Op. 42\, composed in 1942 during Lyatoshynsky’s wartime evacuation\, is often referred to as the “Ukrainian Quintet.” It is a deeply passionate work\, filled with yearning\, hope\, and resilience. Despite the backdrop of war\, the music conveys a sense of inner peace and poetic depth. The four movements—Allegro e poco agitato\, Lento e tranquillo\, Allegro\, and Allegro risoluto—demonstrate Lyatoshynsky’s mastery in balancing drama with lyrical introspection. \nWith the 130th anniversary of Lyatoshynsky’s birth approaching in 2025\, his music is gaining increasing recognition across European concert halls. \n\n\nBuy a ticket

SUMMARY:Screening of “Slovo House. Unfinished Novel”
DESCRIPTION:Slovo House is a story about a generation of Ukrainian artists persecuted by the totalitarian system\, unfolding against the backdrop of one of the largest genocides of the 20th century – the Holodomor.\nDirected by Taras Tomenko.\nScreened in partnership with Cineast. \n\n\nPROGRAM\n\n\n\n\n\n“Slovo” House. Unfinished Novel is a dramatic story about Ukrainian writers from the era of the “Executed Renaissance\,” who were gathered under the roof of one building and forced to work for the benefit of the Soviet system. The film depicts how the communist paradise turns into communist hell. \nIn 1927\, Soviet Ukraine\, by order of Stalin\, the “Slovo” cooperative house was built in Kharkiv. The most outstanding Ukrainian writers live in comfortable apartments. All of them became participants in an experiment aimed at deriving a new type of Soviet writer and establishing total control over the creative process in order to create a single artistic method of socialist realism. However\, not every writer agrees to glorify Stalin’s cult. Unexpectedly for the residents of the “Slovo” House\, an unknown young writer named Volodymyr Akimov moves in with them. Who is he? No one knows. With his arrival\, strange things begin to happen in the “Slovo” House\, things that its walls still remain silent about. \nOriginal title: Будинок СЛОВО. Нескінчений роман. \nDirector: Taras Tomenko \nStarring: Dmytro Oliynyk\, Vyacheslav Dovzhenko\, Stanislav Suknenko \nGenre: Drama \nAudio: Ukrainian \nSubtitles: English \nRuntime: 2 hours \nCountry/year of production: Ukraine\, 2021 \nBuy a ticket

SUMMARY:Old Movies and Jazz: Man with a Movie Camera
DESCRIPTION:Man with a Movie Camera” (1929) is a masterpiece of world’s documentaries and silent movies\, filmed by Dziga Vertov in Ukraine. What makes the experience even more special is the accompaniment of jazz quarter with soundtrack composed by Vitaliy Tkachuk explicitly for this movie and performed by Vitaliy himself and Luxembourgish musicians. \n  \n\n\nPROGRAM\n\n\n\n\n\n“Man with a Movie Camera” (Ukrainian: Людина з кіноапаратом) is an experimental 1929 Soviet silent documentary film\, directed by Dziga Vertov on request of the Ukrainian Photo Cinema State Studio. \nIt presents Soviet urban life during the late 1920s. It has no actors. From dawn to dusk Soviet citizens are shown at work and at play and interacting with the machinery of modern life. To the extent that it can be said to have “characters”\, they are the cameramen of the title\, the film editor\, and the modern Soviet Union they discover and present in the film. \n“Man with a Movie Camera” is famous for the range of experimental cinematic techniques Vertov invented\, employed or developed while filming in Ukraine. \nIn the British Film Institute’s 2012 Sight & Sound poll\, film critics voted it as the best documentary of all time. The National Oleksandr Dovzhenko Film Centre placed it in 2021 at number three of their list of the 100 best films in the history of Ukrainian cinema. \nThe soundtrack to a movie was composed by Vitaliy Tkachuk in 2010 for the 1st International Movie Festival “Silent Nights’ in Odesa\, Ukraine. \nIt was later successfully performed several times\, including on MAMI international movie festival in Mumbai (India) in 2016. \nOne of the locations used in the film was the city of Odesa and its surroundings. This led the composer to use some melodies and motives that make allusion to Odesa\, like music of Leonid Utesov (famous jazz composer born in Odesa) and song “My Odesa” by Evgeni Krichmar\, which opens the soundtrack. \nThe music of this soundtrack is rooted in jazz and uses a lot of improvisation and spontaneous interaction between musicians of the quartet to illustrate all the variety of moods and scenes\, which are many in the film. \nMusicians: \nVitaliy Tkachuk\, guitar \nGilles Wagner\, drums/ percussion \nLaurent Payfert\, contrebasse \nAlessandro Biasi\, saxophone \n\n\n\n  \nBuy a ticket
