SUMMARY:Maid in Law (Viddana)
DESCRIPTION:Maid-in-Law (Viddana) (2020) is a Ukrainian full-length film based on the novel “Felix Austria” by the Ukrainian writer Sofia Andruhovych\, which became a “BBC Book of The Year – 2014”. The events of the film take place in the 19th century in the Austro-Hungarian Ukraine. Dr. Unger loses his wife in a fire but manages to save two girls – his own daughter Adele and the daughter of domestic worker Stefania. In a moment of desperation\, the doctor decides to raise them together. 25 years have passed. The girls have grown up and are just as inseparable\, although Adele is now married. Stefania\, on the other hand\, manages the household\, quenching her passion for cooking. But they still do not understand who they are to each other: sisters and friends\, or maid and mistress. In the kaleidoscope of love and jealousy\, double meanings\, and secrets\, the line between reality and fiction finally disappears.

SUMMARY:Maria Prymachenko Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition is co-organised by Luxembourg City Museum and LUkraine asbl \nMaria Prymachenko is one of the most renowned artists in Ukraine who draw her paintings in the genre of so called “naive art”\, using the motives of folklore\, fairy tales\, songs. This is a style of simplified forms\, vivid colors\, distorted perspective\, and a fresh look. The artist worked with images of good and evil\, created a series of paintings about the Chornobyl nuclear power disaster\, and even appealed to American President Reagan with a request for peace. Also\, you might have seen her images in Ukrianian musical band “Stefania” video mash up they presented during the Eurovision Final 2023. \nMariya’s images have become a source of inspiration for many artists worldwide. To preserve Ukrainian heritage and make it a part of Ukrainians’ daily routine\, designer Tamara Keburia built a collection around the works of the eminent Ukrainian painter Maria Prymachenko. In collaboration with the Maria Prymachenko Family Foundation\, some of the artist’s most famous motifs were recreated as pixel art and interwoven into the latest capsule presented during Paris fashion week\, which will be showcased at the exhibition’s opening event.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Vyshyvankas Defile
DESCRIPTION:Thus\, during the deportation of Ukrainians in 1947 by the Soviets\, they were forbidden to take embroidered shirts with them as a symbol of self-identification. During the Holodomor (the genocide of Ukrainians committed by the Soviets in 1932-1933)\, the embroidered shirt was also a reason for harassment as people exchanged them for bread to survive. In 2015\, Crimean Tatars who wore Ukrainian embroidered shirts on Vyshyvanka Day were detained by Russian special services and falsely accused of preparing a terrorist act. And with the start of the full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine in 2022\, those Ukrainians who were fleeing their homes under Russian occupation tried to take out their Vyshyvankas\, wearing them inside out and putting sweaters on top\, risking their lives to keep this symbol of their identity.\nUkrainian brand Foberini will present their collection at the event. Since 2014\, the Foberini team has been dedicated to translating ancient traditions into modern designs and showcasing them in showrooms worldwide. The brand’s designers draw inspiration from their own country and its rich cultural heritage. Each item is handmade\, featuring traditional handwork techniques.

SUMMARY:UA Days Opening Night: Extravaganza
DESCRIPTION:Lesya Ukrainka was a prominent Ukrainian writer who lived during the 19th and 20th centuries. She was a feminist and a leading figure in the modernist movement in Ukrainian literature. Ukrainka’s work was heavily influenced by different historical periods and cultures. Her plays were inspired by the Old Testament\, the world of ancient Greece and Rome\, the early Christian era\, and the medieval period. In addition to her plays\, Ukrainka wrote short stories\, critical essays\, and masterful translations of works by Homer\, William Shakespeare\, Lord Byron\, and Victor Hugo.\n“Extravaganza” is a tribute to Lesya Ukrainka and her amazing “Lisova pisnya” (Forest song). During this year Cannes festival\, Catherine Deneuve recited her poem ‘Hope’ (Nadiya) to show her support for Ukraine. \nLost in the melodies of trees and flowers blooming\, mythical creatures sing the songs of the Forest’s soul. It’s like a meditation on the interaction of humanity and nature set in a world of primal forces and pure feelings as seen through childhood memories and the recreation of local Volhynian folklore. At the same time\, “Forest Song” explores the tension between ideals and reality\, describes the conflict between duty and dream\, and the tragedy of loss. \nVasyl Popadiuk will showcase his talents as a Ukrainian multi-instrumentalist\, known for his virtuosic violin playing and as the lead player in PAPA DUKE. The ensemble is celebrated for its fusion of Eastern European melodies with classic pop\, rock\, jazz\, and traditional Slavic and gypsy music. In addition to his performances on stage\, Popadiuk accompanies the National Ballet of Canada on piano. SUMMARY:UKRAINE IS CALLING: Installation in front of the European Parliament in Brussels
DESCRIPTION:From 2 to 9 February the firetruck and ambulance that were destroyed during the war in Ukraine will be installed in Brussels in front of the European Parliament. \nIn March 2022\, 2 fire trucks exploded on a landmine in Kyiv’s residential suburb\, 20 km from the city center while the crew was extinguishing the fire. As a result of this tragedy\, 8 firemen were seriously injured\, and one of them got his leg amputated. The ambulance car was shelled by Russian troops in a village in the Kharkiv region.\nThese vehicles were delivered from Ukraine by volunteers of LUkraine asbl within a framework of the global fundraising campaign UKRAINE IS CALLING.They aim to present real evidence of the war in Ukraine and remind everyone it is still on. Before these rescue vehicles were delivered to Brussels\, they had been installed in Luxembourg. The firetruck was set up in the capital\, and the ambulance installation took place in Esch-Sur-Alzette (Luxembourg) \, in Metz (France)\, and in Strasbourg (France).\nNow the vehicles remind parliamentarians of the European Parliament that Ukraine is waiting for decisive actions.\nDuring wartime\, civilians whose lives are in constant danger must have free access to medical help and rescue services. Ukrainian firefighters and medical workers work in hot spots\, frontline\, and mined territories. Also\, Russian troops target rescuing vehicles to thwart civilians’ salvation and constantly shell them with missiles\, mines\, or gunfire. These dangerous conditions not only drastically complicate rescuers’ work\, but also jeopardize savior lives.\n“At the beginning of 2023\, the Ukrainian State Emergency Service reported the death of 57 saviors. 1629 fire trucks and up to 400 ambulances have been destroyed since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion\, and this number is increasing daily. Explosives on mines and shelling turn them into scrap\, but those that are in good condition are stolen by the Russians. With this excessive shortage\, emergency services need to choose which emergency to deal with first. The first part of the vehicles we sent out in December has been already utilized by Ukrainian saviors but unfortunately\, cars at war are consumables. We appreciate those who have donated to this project and encourageeveryone to contribute to the salvation of innocent Ukrainian saviors and civilians”.\nUKRAINE IS CALLING is a fundraising campaign launched by LUkraine asbl in October 2022. It aims to raise 10M EUR for buying 112 rescue vehicles (fire trucks and ambulances). The first convoy of 12 ambulances and 4 fire trucks was sent out to Ukraine in December 2022. 8 of these cars were graciously provided by the Ministry of Interior of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. All the vehicles were transferred to the Ministry of Healthca
